Hybrid cars are finding fans among one of the largest consumer groups - Gen Y.
According to the latest Deloitte annual survey evaluating young drivers and their automotive needs, those aged between 19 and 31 preferred an "electrified vehicle" over any other type of car.
The survey results reveal that Gen Y consumers view hybrid technology as proven and reliable - and fuel efficiency ranked as the primary reason to purchase a hybrid car.
"Almost six in ten Gen Y respondents prefer a hybrid over any other type of vehicle, while a mere two in 100 prefer a pure battery electric vehicle - demonstrating that Gen Y is familiar and comfortable with hybrid technology, but not so much with battery-only technology," vice chairman and automotive practice leader at Deloitte LLP Craig Giffi said (January 19).
Deloitte believes that a Gen Y will be responsible for every one in four new cars sold in 2012 - and 40 per cent of units sold in the next ten years.
Japanese car manufacturer Honda prides itself on supplying Australia with one of only a few hybrid models on the domestic market - the Honda Civic Hybrid.
Powered by the marque's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology system, the Honda hybrid car combines a 1.3-litre i-VTEC petrol engine with a lightweight, high-output electric motor.
